Questions About AP Computer Science A
Where can I find official AP Computer Science A resources and exam details?
For the official course framework, Java Quick Reference, exam information, and student resources, visit the College Board AP Computer Science A page.
What programming language will I learn?
AP Computer Science A uses Java. The course and AP Exam focus on a defined subset of Java appropriate for an introductory college-level programming course.
Do I need prior programming experience?
Prior programming experience is helpful but not required by College Board. Franklin Academy recommends AP Computer Science Principles or prior Java experience when possible, and students entering without coding experience should have a strong academic foundation.
Is there a lab component?
Yes. AP Computer Science A requires at least 20 hours of hands-on structured lab experiences. Students design solutions, write and test Java programs, debug errors, and compare possible approaches to programming problems.
What changed in the newer AP Computer Science A course?
The revised framework reorganized the course from the previous 10-unit structure into 4 units. The current exam also includes 42 multiple-choice questions worth 55% and 4 free-response questions worth 45%.
