Costa Rica Winter 2024 Overview
Costa Rica Winter 2024 Overview
The Costa Rica Winter 2024 program was an experience filled with adventure, hands-on conservation, and cultural immersion. Over the program, students explored breathtaking landscapes, engaged in meaningful volunteer work, and built lasting friendships. More than just a way to earn volunteer hours in winter, this journey was an opportunity to learn, grow, and see the world from a new perspective.
Through biodiversity conservation, teaching, and environmental restoration, students discovered the beauty of nature, the richness of Costa Rican culture, and the power of small actions to create meaningful change. From the pristine beaches of Pacuare to the vibrant animal rescue centers, every day was packed with learning, reflection, and fun.
Education:the Foundation of Change
“Even if it’s hard to change an entire system, small efforts still matter,” one student reflected.
Early in the program, students were introduced to Costa Rica’s education system—its strengths, its challenges, and the disparities in access that many communities still face. These conversations sparked personal reflections on the privilege of education and how access to learning shapes one’s future.
For some, this experience redefined their understanding of social mobility, prompting them to recognize how their own opportunities were made possible through education. They also had the chance to take action, teaching local children through interactive language and learning activities. It was a humbling experience to see how small efforts—one lesson, one conversation—could spark curiosity and excitement for learning.
Living and Learning Through Conservation
At Pacuare, students were pushed outside their comfort zones—not just through hands-on conservation work but through the rawness of nature itself.
The experience was physically demanding—building turtle hatcheries, patrolling beaches at night, and working in unpredictable conditions—but the challenge was part of the lesson. For the first time, many students faced what conservationists endure every day, protecting endangered wildlife against natural and human threats.
Adjusting to Pacuare’s rustic environment was initially difficult, but something shifted as students spent more time with the ocean, the stars, and the rhythm of nature. It was a lesson in perspective, privilege, and resilience.
“At first, I felt uncomfortable, but by the second day, I understood why people dedicate their lives to this work. It’s about something bigger than yourself.”
By the time they left, they weren’t just visitors—they were participants in something meaningful, something that will last far beyond their time there.
Roots of Change, Branches of Growth

“One day, I want to come back and see these trees fully grown. They will be a reminder of this experience, of how much time has passed, and of how much I will have changed by then.”
Education is more than just learning from books—it’s about experiencing, growing, and leaving a lasting impact. In Costa Rica, students didn’t just plant trees; they planted memories, lessons, and a commitment to making the world a better place. Each tree stands as a reminder of the time they spent learning, giving back, and evolving. Just as these trees will grow, so will the students—shaped by their experiences, inspired to continue making a difference wherever they go.
Finding Purpose in Reforestation
The visit to the animal rescue center was an emotional and eye-opening experience. Seeing rescued animals up close—macaws, monkeys, sloths, deer—students were confronted with the harsh reality of habitat destruction, illegal wildlife trade, and human impact on fragile ecosystems.
“The reserve workers dedicate their lives to these animals, and it made me ask myself—what do I care about enough to commit my life to?”
Through hands-on tasks like preparing food, cleaning enclosures, and learning about animal rehabilitation, students gained a deeper understanding of what it truly means to protect biodiversity. They left with a newfound respect for conservationists and a desire to continue supporting these efforts long after the program ended.
Later, during reforestation efforts, students planted trees that will stand for years to come—a symbol of their impact and the lasting effects of even the smallest actions. One student reflected:
Teaching, Learning, and Self-Discovery
At the children’s daycare center, students took on the role of educators, teaching English and environmental awareness. What they didn’t expect was how much they would learn in return.
Despite language barriers, the enthusiasm and curiosity of the children transcended words. Many students realized just how powerful education is—not just as a means of advancement, but as a tool to connect, empower, and inspire.
For some, this experience reignited their love for language learning, inspiring them to improve their Spanish and reconnect with their own cultural heritage.
Costa Rica Winter:A Journey That Keeps Growing
As the Costa Rica Winter 2024 program came to an end, students left with more than just volunteer hours in winter—they carried home new perspectives, deeper appreciation for nature, and a lasting commitment to making a difference.
From teaching children to protecting sea turtles and planting trees, they learned that even small actions can create lasting impact. And just like the trees they planted, these experiences will continue to grow. One day, they may return and see how much those trees have flourished—just as they, too, will have grown in ways they never expected.
