At Franklin Academy, we believe that learning about cultures from around the world helps students become thoughtful, respectful, and globally minded individuals. Día de los Muertos 2026 provides an opportunity for students to discover the rich traditions of this meaningful celebration while developing an appreciation for diversity, family, and cultural heritage.

What Is Día de los Muertos?

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a traditional Mexican celebration observed each year on November 1 and November 2. Recognized around the world for its colorful traditions and meaningful symbolism, the holiday honors the lives and memories of family members and loved ones who have passed away.

Although the name “Day of the Dead” may sound somber, Día de los Muertos is not a day of sadness. Instead, it is a joyful celebration that focuses on remembering loved ones through stories, music, food, artwork, and family gatherings. The holiday celebrates the belief that the memories of those who came before us continue to live on through the lives of their families and communities.

Families often create beautifully decorated ofrendas (altars) featuring photographs, candles, marigold flowers, favorite foods, and meaningful keepsakes to honor loved ones. These traditions have been passed down through generations and continue to be celebrated throughout Mexico and in many communities across the United States and around the world.
