Hunan Microfinance Project-2024 Winter
In December 2024, Franklin Academy students returned to Hunan Province as part of the Global Philanthropy Leadership (GPL) program, building upon their impactful work from Summer 2024. Collaborating closely with professors and students from Hunan University, this phase of the project continued to address rural poverty through sustainable development initiatives.
By expanding on their previous efforts, students further merged academic research with practical applications, empowering rural farmers while deepening their leadership and analytical skills.
Immersing in a Millennium of Culture
On the morning of December 28, the teachers and students of the exchange camp visited Yuelu Academy, the predecessor of Hunan University and a “Yuelu academy” of great historical significance. Established in 976 AD during the Northern Song Dynasty, Yuelu Academy is one of the four great academies of ancient China, bearing witness to the inheritance and development of Chinese civilization for over a thousand years. The rich cultural atmosphere and profound historical relics provided everyone with a more direct and in-depth understanding of traditional Chinese culture and the distinctive Huxiang culture. During the guided tour, participants gained further insight into the profound essence of Huxiang culture and the remarkable achievements of Yuelu Academy.
Exploring Innovation at the Robotics Institute
On the morning of December 28, the teachers and students of the exchange camp visited the Robotics Institute, one of the youngest colleges at Hunan University. Established on April 26, 2016, the Robotics Institute is one of the earliest institutions in China dedicated to cultivating innovative talent in the interdisciplinary field of “Intelligent Robotics+.” During the visit, participants explored the institute’s exhibition hall, observed various robots and autonomous driving systems in action, and even had the opportunity to operate them hands-on. Everyone showed great interest in the scientific research and future applications of robotics.
Immersing in the Vibrant Heritage of Hibadong Village
Hibadong Village, home to the Miao ethnic group, welcomed exchange camp participants with its rich cultural traditions like drum dance, embroidery, and tie-dye crafts. Through hands-on activities, students experienced the artistry and innovation behind these timeless practices. This immersive journey sparked a deeper appreciation for China’s intangible cultural heritage and highlighted the importance of preserving these traditions for future generations.
A Glimpse into Rural Revitalization: Field Research in Shibadong
From December 28, 2024, to January 3, 2025, the teachers and students of the exchange camp conducted interviews and field research in groups, visiting more than ten households across the four ancient villages of Shibadong in Hunan Province. The students asked villagers detailed questions about their family backgrounds, income and expenditure, understanding and implementation of policies, and more. Through these interviews, the participants gained a profound appreciation for the Chinese government’s dedication to implementing policies like “Rural Revitalization” and “Targeted Poverty Alleviation.” They were deeply impressed by how every villager could benefit from the government’s services and welfare programs. The effective execution of numerous “Pro-Farmer” and “Support-Farmer” policies has significantly improved the villagers’ quality of life.
Innovative Strategies for Empowering Shibadong’s Industries
Focusing on Shibadong’s six key industries, the students proposed innovative sales strategies, including livestreaming, express delivery, community-based marketing, and inter-village cooperation, to bring Shibadong’s unique products to global markets. For villagers with entrepreneurial ambitions and potential for growth, student representatives from Franklin Academy offered personalized and tailored business plans, as well as technical support and platform connections. These efforts aim to help more households achieve financial stability and prosperity, contributing to the collective goal of a better life for all.
Building Bridges Through Education and Cultural Exchange
On the morning of December 30, Franklin Academy’s delegation donated educational equipment such as printers and laptops, alongside sports and cultural supplies, to Pai Liao Nine-Year School. Student representatives led oral hygiene workshops and distributed care kits to local children, promoting health awareness. Following the donation ceremony, students from both countries participated in engaging discussions, building mutual understanding and lifelong friendships. The delegation also collaborated on repainting the school buildings, creating a welcoming and inspiring learning space. This meaningful event not only enriched rural education but also strengthened international cultural exchange, leaving a lasting impact on the community.
A Transformative Exchange
This exchange project provided Franklin Academy students with a profound opportunity to immerse themselves in China’s rich cultural heritage, historical depth, and remarkable societal progress. By actively engaging in rural revitalization initiatives and meaningful cultural exchanges, students not only gained a deeper understanding of China but also built lasting friendships that transcend borders.
